Terms
Terms of Service
Last updated October 2, 2026. These terms are an agreement between you and Olduvai Tools, Inc., a Delaware corporation ("we", "us"), the company that makes TapeLine. They cover the TapeLine app, wherever you use it (in a browser, from your home screen, or from an app store), and this website. By using TapeLine you agree to them. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect and why. Questions go to support@tapeline.tools.
The short version
- What you put into TapeLine is yours. We store it, sync it, and show it to the people you share it with. That's all we do with it.
- TapeLine does the math you give it. It doesn't know whether a measurement is right, or whether a result suits your job. Check the numbers before you cut, order, or build.
- TapeLine is free while it's in beta. If we start charging for anything, we'll tell you first and you'll choose whether to pay.
- You can stop using TapeLine and delete your account at any time.
- If we have a dispute we can't settle by talking, it goes to individual arbitration, not court, and not as a class action. You can opt out of that within 30 days. See Disputes.
Who can use TapeLine
You need to be at least 13 years old, and old enough to agree to these terms where you live. If you use TapeLine for a company or a crew, you're agreeing to these terms for yourself, and you confirm you're allowed to use TapeLine for that work.
Your account
The calculator works without an account. To sync between devices or share, you need one. Keep your sign-in to yourself, and tell us at support@tapeline.tools if you think someone else has used it. You're responsible for what happens under your account.
Your content
It's yours. Your projects, tapes, lines, numbers, names, notes, photos, drawings, and voice memos belong to you (or to whoever owned them before you added them). We don't claim ownership of any of it.
What you let us do with it. So TapeLine can work, you give us permission to store, copy, process, and display your content, only to run TapeLine for you: to save it, sync it between your devices, back it up, show it to the people you share it with, and send the emails you ask for. This permission ends when the content is deleted, apart from backup copies, which expire as described in the Privacy Policy.
Only add what you're allowed to. Don't upload photos, plans, or other material you don't have the right to share.
Sharing and working together
When you share a project, folder, or tape, the people you invite can see it, and can change it if you give them that role. Anyone with a share link you create can view that tape until you turn the link off or it expires. You choose who sees what, so share carefully.
Whose project is it? A project belongs to the person who owns it. When you add lines, notes, or photos to someone else's project, they become part of that project's record. If you later delete your account, they stay with the project, shown as from a former member. If you own a project others work in, you can hand it to one of them; if you delete your account without doing that, the project and everything in it is deleted for everyone.
Check the numbers before you build
TapeLine is a calculator. It does arithmetic, unit conversion, and geometry on the numbers you give it, and its solvers (stairs, rafters, and the rest) apply standard formulas to your inputs. It doesn't measure anything, and it can't tell whether a number you entered, spoke, or marked on a photo is correct.
- Verify every result before you cut material, order it, or build with it.
- Measurements taken from photos are estimates. Their accuracy depends on the photo and on the reference you set. Confirm them with a tape before you rely on them.
- Voice entry can mishear. Check what was written before you use it.
- TapeLine is not engineering, building-code, or structural advice. It doesn't know your local codes, your loads, or your materials. Where a design needs an engineer, an architect, or an inspector, get one.
- Rounding, unit choices, and the solver you pick are your decisions. Results are only as good as the inputs and the method.
Using TapeLine fairly
Don't:
- break the law, or help anyone else break it, with TapeLine;
- upload anything harmful, such as malware, or content that harasses or threatens someone;
- try to get into accounts, projects, or data that aren't yours, or get around how sharing and permissions work;
- overload, probe, or attack our systems, or scrape TapeLine with automated tools;
- copy, resell, or rebuild TapeLine itself, or remove our notices from it.
Price, the beta, and changes to TapeLine
TapeLine is free to use while it's in beta. The calculator will stay free. We plan to offer a paid Pro plan later. If we do, we'll tell you the price and what it includes before anything is charged, and you'll decide whether to subscribe. A subscription bought through Apple's App Store or Google Play is billed and managed by them, under their terms. We'll add the details here before Pro is offered.
Because TapeLine is in beta, things will change. We may add, change, or remove features, and TapeLine may sometimes be unavailable. We'll try to give notice before removing something you rely on.
Ending things
You can leave any time. Stop using TapeLine, or delete your account in the app or at tapeline.tools/delete-account.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, puts other people or TapeLine at risk, or that the law requires us to close. Unless the law or safety stops us, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to fix it or take your content with you first.
Our software and name
TapeLine, its design, and its software belong to Olduvai Tools, Inc. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use TapeLine under these terms. "TapeLine" and its logo are our names and marks; please don't use them in a way that suggests we endorse you. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything.
Getting TapeLine from an app store
If you install TapeLine from Apple's App Store or Google Play, that store's own terms also apply to your download, and these terms apply to your use of TapeLine. These terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google. They aren't responsible for TapeLine, its support, or any claim about it; we are, to the extent these terms say. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
No warranties
TapeLine is provided "as is" and "as available." To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no promises beyond those in these terms. That includes no promise that TapeLine will always be available, free of errors, or right for your purpose, and no promise that its results are accurate for your job. Some places don't allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.
Limits on our responsibility
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- We aren't responsible for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost profits, lost data, wasted material, rework, or delays, even if we were told they were possible.
- We aren't responsible for losses that come from a number you didn't check, from content you or someone you shared with entered, or from relying on TapeLine where professional advice was needed.
- Our total responsibility for any claim about TapeLine is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and $100.
Nothing in these terms limits responsibility the law doesn't allow us to limit, such as for fraud, or for harm caused by gross negligence or wilful misconduct.
If you misuse TapeLine
If someone brings a claim against us because you broke these terms or the law using TapeLine, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it.
Disputes
Please read this section carefully. It changes how a dispute between you and us is resolved: by an arbitrator instead of a judge or jury, and one person at a time instead of as a class.
Talk to us first. Before starting any claim, email support@tapeline.tools with your name, your account email, what went wrong, and what you want. We'll do the same if we have a claim against you. Most problems are easier to fix than to argue about. If it isn't resolved within 60 days, either of us can start arbitration.
Arbitration. Any dispute between you and us about TapeLine or these terms will be decided by binding individual arbitration, not in court. That includes disputes about whether this section applies. The American Arbitration Association (AAA) runs it under its Consumer Arbitration Rules, available at adr.org. The arbitrator can award you the same remedies a court could, but only for you. The hearing happens by video or phone, on the documents alone, or in person in the county where you live, whichever you prefer. If your claim is for $10,000 or less, we'll pay the AAA's filing, administration, and arbitrator fees beyond what you'd pay to file in court, unless the arbitrator finds your claim frivolous.
No class actions. You and we may each bring claims only on our own behalf, never as a plaintiff or class member in a class, collective, or representative action. The arbitrator can't combine claims from more than one person.
What stays in court. Either of us can instead bring an individual claim in small claims court, if it qualifies. Either of us can go to court to stop someone from infringing or misusing intellectual property, such as copying TapeLine's software or using its name.
You can opt out. If you don't want arbitration, email support@tapeline.tools within 30 days of first agreeing to these terms. Include your name, your account email, and a line saying you're opting out of arbitration. Opting out doesn't change anything else in these terms or how we treat you.
If part of this doesn't hold. If the no-class-actions rule is found unenforceable for a particular claim, that claim goes to court and not to arbitration, and the rest of this section still applies to everything else. If we change this section later, the change won't apply to a dispute either of us had already told the other about.
Law and courts. The Federal Arbitration Act governs this section. Otherwise, these terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Anything that goes to court under these terms will be decided by the state or federal courts in Santa Clara County, California, and you and we both agree to those courts. If you live in a country whose consumer law gives you the right to bring a claim where you live, or doesn't allow arbitration agreements like this one, these terms don't take that right away.
Changes to these terms
When we change these terms, we'll post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change is significant and you have an account, we'll email you before it takes effect. If you keep using TapeLine after that, the new terms apply. If you don't agree, you can stop using TapeLine and delete your account.
The rest
These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about TapeLine. If a court finds part of them unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don't enforce something right away, we haven't given up the right to. You can't transfer these terms to anyone else; we may transfer them if Olduvai Tools or TapeLine is sold or merged.
